How to store milk so that it does not spoil

Milk is rich in calcium, protein and a whole "bouquet" of vitamins. But, unfortunately, it spoils very quickly. Therefore, it is important to know the basic conditions for preserving the freshness, flavor and health benefits of this food product.

How to Store Milk So It Doesn't Spoil

In a closed container

In a closed container, the contents are stored differently depending on the type of processing:

  1. Sterilized milk is stored for no more than 34 hours in a cold place.
  2. Pasteurized milk has a shelf life of 36 hours to 3 to 5 days in the refrigerator.
  3. The shelf life of ultra-pasteurized milk is six months, even at room temperature.

Important! Storage times may vary depending on the company's specifications. Study the information on the product packaging.

In open packs

Opening the container gives bacteria access inside, and the souring process begins. Opened milk can be stored in different ways. But the law is the same: the lower the temperature, the longer the shelf life. In the refrigerator, it reaches 3 days.

On the third day, the milk is already in a critical state. It has a sour taste. You can't drink it, but you can use it, for example, for baking or for making curd.

Can I freeze it?

Some people ask: Can I freeze milk? Yes, you can. It increases the shelf life, but enzymes and some vitamins are lost. Therefore, it is better to drink freshly bought rather than defrosted.

The freezing process is simple:

  1. Pour the milk into the container you choose to freeze. Do not pour it to the brim, because the product will increase in volume when it freezes.
  2. It's best to start the process with a quick freeze at -22° C.

That's all. It is better to defrost the milk on the bottom shelf of the refrigerator, by evening it will be ready for use. But note that you should not refreeze thawed milk again. So all the benefits and taste will be lost.

Frozen milk can be stored until thawed. But we do not advise keeping it in this form for longer than 2 months.
